Se trata de la séptima causa de muerte entre los adultos mayores

“El Alzheimer es una forma de demencia ocasionada por la pérdida de algunas funciones cerebrales. Afecta los procesos de memoria, del pensamiento y el comportamiento. De Acuerdo a la Asociación de Alheizmer en México se estima que una cuarta parte de la población de adultos mayores tienen este padecimiento”, señaló René Nájera Alvarado, neurólogo.
Añadió que de acuerdo a la asociación ya citada se estima hay 800 mil personas mayores de 50 años en el país con este padecimiento; 350 mil de estas son atendidas por el Instituto Nacional de Neurología, de las cuales mueren 2 mil 30 anualmente.
Se trata de la séptima causa de muerte entre los adultos mayores: las causas de defunción que le anteceden son: problemas cardiovasculares, crónicos del riñón, diabetes, accidentes cerebro-vasculares, enfermedad pulmonar obstructiva crónica y accidentes de tránsito.
“Dijo “la persona con alzhéimer se convierte en paciente descuidado, es muy susceptible a caídas, no se percata de muchas situaciones y puede lastimarse, de repente puede salir a la calle y es atropellado, se expone a diversos riesgos, van perdiendo funciones: el lenguaje se deteriora, no puede moverse de forma adecuada y termina postrado en su cama, por lo que se ve susceptible de tener infecciones de tipo pulmonar: neumonías o infecciones urinarias, ulceras , etc. El Alzheimer en si no causa la mortalidad sino todo lo que ocasiona”.
Explicó que el alzhéimer tiene un componente genético, “la proteína Tao es la encargada de mantener los micro túbulos que contienen las neuronas. Por estos van a transitar las sustancias químicas para ponerse en contacto con otras neuronas, los cuales están unidos por la proteína Tao, la gente que tiene un defecto o carencia de esa proteína hace que los micro túbulos se retraigan, lleguen al cuerpo de la neurona e impidan su función normal”.
Agregó que con el paso de los años se van afectando más neuronas, de tal forma que la degeneración va siendo progresiva y lenta, “las regiones del cerebro donde se almacena la información se deterioran y ya no sirven como tal, ni tampoco lo almacenado se puede recuperar”.
Indicó que las mujeres tienen un mayor riesgo a desarrollar este padecimiento, pues generalmente viven más que los varones, “es parte de la condición genética, aunque también intervienen factores hormonales”.
Añadió, “el Alzheimer es multifactorial, como ya trae el problema genético la persona, únicamente es cuestión de que se ponga en contacto con algo para que empiece el deterioro, ya sea pesticidas, el plomo. Otros factores de riesgo son: niveles altos de colesterol, los problemas cardiovasculares o de hipertensión arterial, diabetes mellitus, el uso de drogas sobre todo la cocaína, la cual provoca que las neuronas se mueran”.
Mencionó, “para que las personas puedan ejercitar el cerebro y de alguna forma no se manifieste tanto la demencia se recomienda como actividad la lectura o tocar algún instrumento musical. Eso mantiene activo el cerebro al igual que el proceso de pensar y razonar, Por tanto favorecen que sea más tardía la presencia de este padecimiento”, finalizó.

2050 año donde, estiman, habrá más de 3 millones de personas con Alzheimer
