El establecimiento de cultivos transgénicos en la Cienega podría depender de las necesidades de los productores y de los factores climáticos de acuerdo Carlos Méndez Inocencio, encargado del área de Desarrollo e Inovación del Centro Interdisciplinario de Investigación para el Desarrollo Integral Regional del IPN.
Señaló que cuando se habla del concepto transgénico se refiere a un organismo que ha recibido material genético de otro mismo que hereda a las siguientes generaciones estás características: «Por lo general, cuando se utilizan genes de resistencia, por ejemplo, tolerancia a los herbicidas o genes que pueden ser nocivos para las plagas se afecta todo, no nada más la plaga de un cultivo específico».
Esta modificación genética, de acuerdo al especialista, es utilizada para mejorar las prácticas productivas pero también para generar economías pues al introducir granos modificados genéticamente se reduce la inversión en áreas como el combate a las plagas.
Sobre la resistencia global al establecimiento de granos con modificaciones genéticas señaló que esto es básicamente porque hay cultivos que tienen parientes silvestres que son plantas que no son utilizadas de manera comercial y existe el riesgo que exista una transferencia a éstas del ADN de las que fueron modificadas genéticamente a más de que pudiera darse esa misma transferencia en cultivos criollos, en el caso de los maíces lo que representaría una modificación de las especies endémicas.
«Hay mecanismos que se han buscado para que no se dé esa transferencia, se puede dar la transferencia de genes a cloroplasto y esto evita la transferencia a otras generaciones».
Señaló que se tiene la idea de que las modificaciones del ADN de las plantas pueden transferirse a los seres humanos, pero, aseguró, no hay tal transferencia aunque, aclaró, si la modificación genética en el cultivo fue diseñada para atacar una bacteria u organismo específico y ésta se encuentra en la flora intestinal, la modificación genética pudiera atacarla.
Sobre los factores que pudieran influir a los productores para el establecimiento de este tipo de granos Méndez Inocencia señaló que posiblemente buscarían granos resistentes a las crisis hídricas recurrentes durante los últimos años
